10 Fat Fighting Foods to Eat

10 Fat Fighting Foods to Eat

When you’re trying to lose weight, it can be demoralizing to constantly be reminded of all the foods you should not be eating. But some foods are ideal for weight control. Dubbed “fast foods” or “edible amphetamines”, some foods help speed up the metabolism and break down fat.
Others nurture the liver or keep you full for longer. But there are no “zero-kilojoule” foods, says Laura Sutherland, dietitian and spokesperson for the Dietitians Association of Australia.
“Foods can play a part in minimising our build-up of fat storage, but the real key is energy in versus energy out – not taking in too many extra kilojoules and burning off a little extra.” Here are the ten best foods to reach for.

1. Lean meat

Why you can eat up: Researchers in Denmark found boosting the lean protein in your diet may help you burn five per cent more kilojoules a day, perhaps because it takes more energy to digest protein than carbohydrates or fat. Sutherland says lean meat’s benefit is satiety. “A meal with lean protein makes you feel satisfied, which helps to avoid overeating later.”
How to eat: Opt for lean pork, chicken or turkey and remove any skin beforehand.

2. Low-fat milk, cheese, yoghurt

Why you can eat up: A US study found consuming about 1300 milligrams of calcium a day helped people lose almost twice as much weight. Another study found post-menopausal women who consumed calcium with vitamin D supplements put on less weight than those who didn’t. It is thought calcium may break down fat cells and suppress the growth of new ones.
How to eat: Eat low-fat yoghurt and add reduced-fat or cottage cheese to a sandwich.

3. Berries and citrus fruits

Why you can eat up: Vitamin C-rich foods contain flavones, compounds that increase metabolism, control cholesterol levels and help dilute fats. A US study found women with a high-flavone diet gained less body fat over 14 years than those not on the diet. Another study found eating strawberries and raspberries before exercise helped burn up to 30 per cent more fat.
How to eat: Try fresh orange juice, a fruit smoothie or a handful of berries before gym.

4. Soybeans, chickpeas, lentils
Why you can eat up: “Legumes, lentils, soybeans and chickpeas are a mix of protein and carbohydrate,” says Sutherland. They’re low in fat, high in fibre and have a low glycaemic index (GI). Soybeans also contain choline, a component of lecithin which helps to move fat from the liver.
How to eat: Add to soups, curries or stir-fries.

5. Salmon, avocado, nuts, ground flaxseed

Why you can eat up: Oily fish and plant-based fats contain essential fatty acids that help burn fat. Research shows adding a handful of walnuts or almonds to a low-fat diet daily helps to reduce weight, body fat and insulin levels. Fish has also been found to lower women’s levels of leptin, a hormone linked to a slower metabolism and obesity.
How to eat: Eat a handful of unsalted, unroasted nuts, add flaxseed to cereal or yoghurt, eat avocado and salmon sandwiches.

6. Cinnamon

Why you can eat up: US Agricultural scientists found adding just a quarter teaspoon of cinnamon to your diet can boost your sugar metabolism, lower blood sugar levels and help you store less fat.
How to eat: Add to yoghurt or smoothies.

7. Sweet potatoes, oats, wholegrain cereal

Why you can eat up: The high soluble fibre content and low GI keep you full for longer. “This helps regulate blood glucose levels [so] you don’t want to snack,” says Sutherland.
How to eat: Eat porridge, wholegrain sandwiches, lean meat and sweet potatoes.

8. Chilli, cayenne pepper

Why you can eat up: Studies show that people who eat spicy foods consume less kilojoules and carbohydrates than those with milder tastebuds. Scientists believe it’s thanks to the chemical capsaicin, which can trigger a thermodynamic burn that speeds up heart rate and boosts metabolism by as much as 25 per cent. “You sweat more, so the body’s working harder,” says Sutherland.
How to eat: Pair with lean protein to help process fat through the body.

9. Mustard, Indian curries

Why you can eat up: While more human testing is needed, a US study found that turmeric, the spice that adds colour to mustard and Indian curries, slows down the spread of fat tissue in animals and lowers blood glucose, triglyceride, fatty acid and cholesterol.
How to eat: Add turmeric to curry or casseroles. Try mustard on sandwiches instead of butter or mayonnaise.

10. Ginger and garlic

Why you can eat up: Ginger and garlic are vasodilators, expanding your blood vessels and boosting body heat. In turn, your metabolism speeds up a little (some animal studies found ginger increased metabolism by as much as 20 per cent).
How to eat: Add ground or fresh to curries and stir-fries. Add ginger to tea and fresh juice and garlic to salad dressings.

BOTOX for under arm sweating

BOTOX for under arm sweating

Leave the pit stains out the door

Our body produces sweat to keep itself cool, which is why you'll notice it dripping when something causes your temperature to rise. But it's not just hot and humid weather that causes you to sweat: Exercise, physical stress, emotional stress and nervousness can also make you sweat. About 1 percent of Americans, however, sweat excessively (as much as four times the normal amount) just going about their daily lives as their bodies try to sustain a normal temperature. It's a condition known as primary hyperhidrosis, and it most noticeably affects the palms of the hands, the feet and the armpits. People with this condition can be plagued with not only sweaty clothes and a soggy handshake, but also with skin infections and social embarrassment. This kind of sweat can't be tamed by over-the-counter antiperspirants. What does help? As it turns out, botulinum toxin type A, what we know as Botox.
BOTOX what is it?

Botox is the darling of celebrities because of its ability to smooth wrinkles, but it can also stop your sweat. This cosmetic treatment is actually a neurotoxin produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum (which is found in soil). It adversely affects our muscle control, causing drooping eyelids and blurry vision, difficulty breathing and swallowing, muscle weakness and paralysis. This ability to paralyze is what makes it useful in fixing furrows and, as it turns out, treating excessive sweating.

Why do we sweat?
Our skin -- specifically the middle layer, or dermis -- isn't made up of just collagen and elastin -- it's full of sweat glands, hair follicles, sebaceous glands (these produce oil), blood vessels and nerve endings. Our body secretes sweat from two types of glands, the eccrine and apocrine glands. Eccrine glands are located in the skin, all over the body. Apocrine glands, on the other hand, are located in places on the body where there's a high concentration of hair follicles, such as the scalp, armpits and groin area. These glands are controlled by the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, the command center that also controls involuntary bodily functions such as breathing, digestion, body temperature, heart rate and blood pressure. When you have an increase in body temperature, your sympathetic nervous system automatically signals the sweat glands to cool your body.
How does it work?
When Botox is injected into the skin, the treatment affects the signal between the nerve endings and the sweat glands in the dermis. The botulism toxin binds itself to the nerve endings near the injection site and acts like a roadblock. It blocks the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, a chemical our nerve cells make to communicate with each other, and this disrupts the message sent from the nerve endings to stimulate the production of sweat. The sweat glands are none the wiser.

History 101
In 2004, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved Botox injections to treat axillary hyperhidrosis(excessively sweaty armpits), and some doctors use it to treat palmar hyperhidrosis (excessively sweaty palms) and plantar hyperhidrosis (excessively sweaty feet). Each treatment may include several injection points concentrated in the affected area, and each treatment is expected to last about six months. Don't worry about blocking the sweat from one or two small areas of the body -- there are plenty of sweat glands to handle the job.

Bro-tox : The Man's survival Kit

Bro-tox : The Man's survival Kit

Botox is the most popular aesthetic treatment in the world. In 2011, 300,000 U.S. men received Botox for facial wrinkles.   The spotlight can become vanity's victim and the search for something bigger and better turns wants into needs.  For example take a look at the American Idol cast, Ryan Seacrest reportedly overdid the Botox back in Season 2 of American Idol. When he turned up to work with a frozen
face and told the producers that he had undergone Botox injections to get rid of wrinkles on his face, they reportedly banned him from further treatments.  Ryan’s co-host Simon Cowell also admitted to Botox treatments as well.
Botox treatments in men should be subtle, not obvious.  Every face looks different on the surface, so too does the anatomy of the muscles and soft tissues under the skin and it’s crucial to take account of this when performing the treatment. The goal of the treatment should always be to leave you looking rested and rejuvenated, which is why a tailored approach is so crucial to achieve this. The upper face is the most commonly treated area with botox and indeed often delivers the best and most reliable results.
Treatment of the upper face is generally regarded as a painless experience and is generally associated with a low rate of complications and side effects. Most people find that the results last 4-6 months at a time although gradually the duration of results starts to increase after you have the treatment repeated several times.

With over 10 years of experience, Global Laser Cosmetics has been the premier location in San Diego to enhance your appearance and to provide you with all your skin care and cosmetic needs in Southern California. Options for your new specs

Great, I have a huge scratch on my glasses!
By Amy Contizano, ABOC

“My lenses are all scratched up.  I wonder if the scratches can be buffed out.”

A very common question that patients have posed to me over the years.  No, scratches can’t be buffed out of lenses; doing so would actually change the prescription.  So what happens when your lenses are all scratched up?  The only solution here is to replace the lenses.  If you elected to coat your lenses with a non-glare coating, then chances are that you have at least a one year warranty allowing you to replace scratched lenses at no charge.  Aside from having an extended scratch warranty, a non-glare coating can eliminate glare while driving at night or while working on the computer or even from the overhead fluorescent lighting that is present in most offices.  What I do encounter as the most common complaint about the non-glare coating is how to keep lenses clean.

solutions for scratched glasses The best way to care for your lenses is by using a cleaning spray and a microfiber cleaning cloth.  If a cleaning spray isn't available, then at least rinse the lenses off with water.  The reason for this is that if there are any minute dust particles on the lenses and you just start wiping them, then it will rub the dust into the coating, scratching your lenses.  So you always want to rinse the lenses first to get everything off of them before wiping.  Another thing that people don’t realize is that fabric softeners and laundry detergents are harsh and can scratch lenses and coatings.  What does that mean?  Stop using your shirt to clean your glasses, haha!  Wood products will also scratch lenses so refrain from using tissue or paper towels to clean lenses.  Using harsh chemicals like Windex can not only scratch lenses but also strip coatings off.

Cleaning cloths are also reusable so when it starts to seem as though it’s no longer helping to clean your lenses, just hand wash it with a mild hand soap and let it air dry.  That way, you aren’t exposing it to laundry detergents and you don’t run the risk of shrinking the microfiber material in the dryer.  It shrinks up to the size of a postage stamp, definitely not useful any more!  Here at Global Laser Vision, we carry a specially formulated eyeglass cleaner available to you with a cleaning cloth for $6.95.  Use it all up?  No problem!  Bring us the empty bottle and we’d be more than happy to refill it for you.  Refills are only $5.

Glaucoma : LASIK options?

LASIK & Glaucoma
Glaucoma is an insidious disease that can usually manifest little to no actual symptoms. In fact, it is estimated that over 2.2 million people in the United States have Glaucoma, while only half of those people know they have the disease (1). Glaucoma affects nearly 2% of the population in the United States, which is over 2.7 million people. The number of patients diagnosed with glaucoma increased by half a million people between 2000 and 2010. (2). According to the World Health Organization, Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness across the world.
Glaucoma primarily affects the optic nerve, the pathway that carries images from the eye to the brain. While its exact mechanism isn’t fully understood, we know that Glaucoma ultimately causes atrophy (or cell death) of the optic nerve itself. This causes a progressive loss of peripheral vision, which could lead to total blindness if not treated.
Doctors use three primary means to detect Glaucoma. First, we can measure the amount of peripheral vision each person has through specific diagnostic testing. While any amount of peripheral vision loss is unusual, Glaucoma tends to create certain patterns of vision loss we can typically recognize. Second, we can check the health of the optic nerve itself though microscopic observation or photography. Third, it has been observed that the majority of patients with Glaucoma also have elevated eye pressures. Measuring this pressure is a standard test performed during any comprehensive visual exam. Testing eye pressure involves an instrument that either utilizes a puff of air or a probe that comes into contact with cornea, the clear front part of the eye. While these readings are generally very accurate, other factors besides eye pressure can affect the validity of these readings. One of these factors is the thickness of the cornea – an unusually thick cornea will cause eye pressure readings to be higher. Conversely, a thinner than average cornea will cause these readings to be lower. We can measure the corneal thickness and adjust our final pressure readings based on those findings.
For the majority of people that have been diagnosed with Glaucoma, LASIK can still be an excellent option to improve your vision. While LASIK cannot bring back vision that has been lost due to Glaucoma, it can still be used to reduce or eliminate your dependency on glasses or contact lenses. LASIK surgery involves reshaping the cornea of your eye. Usually after LASIK surgery, the cornea is thinner than before. This can affect the pressure readings your doctor records during your Glaucoma follow up exams. It is very important to tell the physician that you had LASIK so they can reference your new corneal thickness to calculate a more accurate pressure result.
While most patients with Glaucoma are likely excellent candidates for LASIK, it is important to come in for a free consultation to see if LASIK is right for you. We will provide a full health examination of your eyes and discuss with you how LASIK may be able to reduce or even eliminate your dependency on glasses or contact lenses. Schedule your free consultation today!

Healthy Recipes : Coffee & walnut cake overnight oatmeal parfait

Coffee & walnut cake

overnight oatmeal parfait

We love this amazing  and healthy recipe so much that we had to share it! for additional information follow the link to "life is beautiful blog" :)

Nuts have gotten a bad rap for being too high in fat, but the truth about them is that nuts, especially walnuts, are a powerhouse of nutrition.
Helps you lose weight
  • Contrary to what people believe, walnuts are actually good for weight management since an ounce of walnut contains 2.5g of omega 3 fats, 4g of protein and 2g of fibre that help provide satiety. Any successful weight management plan must include the satiety factor; so walnut is undoubtedly the right food to consider if you are into a weight management programme. Despite being ‘dense in calories, walnuts can be an important tool in helping you lose weight.  Here are some other food options that can help you lose weight.

Coffee & walnut cake overnight oatmeal parfait

Ingredients:
- 1/2 cup oats
- 1/2 cup almond milk
- 1 shot of espresso
- 2tsp muscovado sugar, if desired
- 1/4 cup chopped walnuts
For serving:
- vanilla soya yoghurt
- 1 small-ish banana, sliced
- maple syrup or other syrup of choice (I used coconut nectar)
- a few walnut pieces and chocolate drops for decoration
Combine the oats, almond milk, espresso, and chopped walnuts and leave to soak overnight. My coffee was quite strong so I added some muscovado sugar, but this may not even have been necessary in the end.
Once soaked, spoon the oatmeal into a large glass, carefully layering it with the yoghurt, sliced banana, and drizzles of syrup inbetween. Top with a few banana slices, walnut pieces, chocolate drops and some more syrup and devour with a long-handled spoon. :)
For a less sweet version, omit the muscovado sugar, and use plain soya yoghurt (mixed with vanilla extract if desired) instead of the vanilla soya yoghurt.

Digitize your life! - Digital Lens

Digitize your life!

By Amy Contizano, ABOC

With technology evolving as quickly as it is, it’s no wonder that the optical industry is constantly changing and improving.  A really great lens technology has come out in recent years that I feel most people still don’t know about, Free Form digital lenses, giving patients high definition vision.

As most patients can attest, especially contact lens wearers, there comes a point with a conventional lens where things just aren’t as crisp and clear as they could be.  This is because as your eye tracks to different parts of the lens, the prescription varies slightly as you get further and further away from the optical center which is where the best clarity is achieved.  With digital lens technology, they have been able to calculate your optimal prescription throughout the lens, giving you that optical center clarity throughout the entire lens.  This enhances your vision by giving you more crisp vision and better clarity and results in what patients have been calling HD vision.

This sort of technology is especially great for patients who have high prescriptions.  Digital lenses will greatly enhance vision for patients with high prescriptions.  It’s a great option for patents who wear contact lenses as well.  Contact lens wearers are always telling me that their vision isn’t as clear with glasses as it is with their contacts.  This is because with the contact lens directly on the eye, everywhere you look things are nice and clear and when you switch back to glasses the prescription changes throughout the lens become more noticeable.  Digital lenses are a great way to get seamless, high definition vision.

Global Laser Vision is excited to announce the introduction of our high end eye wear package.  A package valued at $587 which includes the selection of a new Viva Collection frame, thin and lightweight Shamir Spectrum digital lenses with a SharpView non-glare coating is available to Global Laser Vision patients for $250.  Additional fees will apply for upgrades such as Transitions lenses that darken when outdoors or to make them polarized for sunglasses.  A 20% courtesy will be applied on additional pairs of glasses purchased outside of the package deal.  Stop in today to see what high definition vision will do for you!
