Latest Eye Trend

Eyeball Tattoos

Sagging pants – that’s so yesterday!  Never let it be said that criminals are not on the cutting edge of fashion.  The newest craze given to us from behind prison walls:  Eye Tattooing.
Prisoners have found a way to color the whites of their eyes to blue, black, red or any color in the rainbow.

The general process of this consists of a total of 40 injections into the eye to capture the proper pigment. The pigment is initially injected under the top layer of the eye using a syringe. At first a traditional needle that had ink on it was used, but the ink can not hold, so a syringe is used. To watch the process click HERE.

Although we don't know much about style-behind-bars, we were aware of the body piercing and the tattooing that goes on in the cells...but two prisoners have opened our eyes to the newest self-mutilating trend: eye tattoos that change the sclera to be blue or even red.

When asked why he would do this to himself, David Boltjes (whose eyes are red) poetically remarked, "You can't ask why...the real question is why not," and his fellow inmate, blue-eyed Paul Inman explained that now, no one in the world would have the same color peepers as he has. Neither man would say how they managed to color their eyeballs, but both concurred it was extremely painful.

The San Diegan’s Guide to Father’s Day

Father's day gift guide

Father’s Day undoubtedly brings up fond memories.  Whether it’s the time dad taught you how to play catch (and still has the scars to prove it) or that weekend he pretended to be upset that you and your first boyfriend broke up, Dads are true heroes and deserve to be recognized for all they've done.

Let’s be honest though, buying gifts can be incredibly hard, and, sure, it’s always simple to take the easy way out with a tie or coffee mug, but don’t you think he deserves something special this year?  We’ve put together this handy guide of great Father’s Day gifts and activities for every type of dad, from the obsessed tech geek to the beer aficionado.

Gadget Geek

We're sure your dad will be appreciative of whatever you get for him on Father’s Day, and while a heartfelt card and hug are nice, they probably can’t compare to a cutting-edge tablet.  Check out Fry’s Electronics (every SoCal residents staple) for the latest gadgets to make Dad a hit around the watercooler.  If he’s got all the latest toys, hook him up with some older ones!  Rising Sun Comic store is having their grand opening this month and you’ll be sure to get something Marvel-ous (see what we did there?).  If you’re looking to go all out for Dad this year, make sure he can reduce eye strain by giving him perfect, superhero-like vision with LASIK from Global Laser Vision.  They’re offering free consultations and eye exams, and have some of the best financing available (plus a military discount), so why not give the gift that keeps on giving?

Father's day gifts

    ·         Lasik + free eye exam
    ·         Grand opening of Rising Sun Comic store
    ·         Fry’s electronics June Sale

Suave Stud

Does Dad always step out like he’s auditioning for the latest character arc on Mad Men?  Help him out with some stylish finds to keep him looking his best.  With summer approaching, he’ll want to keep his chest hair more ‘Burt Reynolds’ and less ‘Teen Wolf’ with the Laser Hair Removal & ‘Man-croderm’ (microderm/facial for the brute type) combo from Global Laser Cosmetics, plus they’re offering 10% off their collection of Vivite skincare products.  Extra added bonus?  They’re right across from Fashion Valley Mall, where you can set Dad up with a personal shopping experience at Macy’s.  He’ll feel like a celebrity (and look like one) and he’ll be primed, prepped, and ready to show the rest of the crowd up at the Father’s Day Beer Brunch Cruise that Hornblower is offering.

Ok, some men are the traditional types.  If your Dad was the kind to throw hot dogs on the grill while yelling at you to ‘rub some dirt on it and stop crying’ (traumatic and oddly motivating at the same time…), he’ll really appreciate some one-on-one bonding that involves physical activity.  The obvious answer to your gift query is to take him to a Padres game!  You can check out their schedule here, and make a day of it by swinging through downtown San Diego’s much loved WhiskeyGirl after the game.  They’re currently offering $30 towards food and drinks for only $15, so this is the perfect gift for a kid on a budget.   Looking to branch out a bit?  Get a sun filled work out on the water by taking Dad kayaking at OEX!  They’ve got two awesome locations at Mission Beach and Point Loma, and have an exclusive Father’s Day promo running for 20%off rentals and 5% off retail.  Did you know that at OEX you can buy Pop one of the 'Made-in-California' fishing kayaks from Malibu Kayaks?  They are the most popular kayak manufacturer available right now, just check out their Facebook page!  If your Dad enjoys fishing with live bait, OEX recommends checking out the Stealth series with the patented livewell system. With the sunny SoCal weather and reflective beaches, combine your kayaking trip with some rad sports sunglasses outfitted with the latest technology, ‘Digital Lenses’.  You can read some more info on them by clicking the link, and if you’re hooked swing by Global Laser Optical to check out their selection.

·         Digital lenses
·          San Diego Padres game tickets
·         OEX – For a limited time only at point Loma they are giving you 20% off rentals + 5% off retail!
·         Whiskey girl - get $30 towards food and drinks for only $15*

Food Fan

The Foodie Father bonds most over, you guessed it, food, and how can we hate them for that? (Despite the fact that swimsuit weather and bacon doughnuts don’t necessarily go hand-in-hand)  Unless you’re a Michelin starred chef, take Dad to one of San Diego’s finest Gastro Pubs and enjoy the gift with him!  Luce Kitchen and Bar is a stylish favorite, with staples like lamb tacos, the smoked tri-tip sandwich, and an extensive tap list, you’ll both be hooked.  If you’re looking for a gift that keeps giving all year long, why not smooth Dad over with an artisan ‘Beer of the Month’ subscription?  Yes, they really exist.

San Diego dad

Our next suggestions could possibly count as a gift to mom (or Dad’s latest date), but with all that food and beer he’s hitting, help Dad keep his figure with some personal training at the luxury Gym In Coronado.  Ocean views, state of the art equipment, and some of Coronado’s finest restaurants nearby help neutralize that eggplant parm he’s planning to order.  Never fear though, you can always work on that remaining ‘pooch’ by getting him the amazing Viora service at Global Laser Cosmetics.  This machine has been nicknamed the ‘fat melting’ device, and it actually works!  Read more about the cellulite blasting, skin tightening, waistline reducing miracle here.  Last but not least, we did mention Bacon Doughnuts.  BACON doughnuts.  If you haven’t stopped by The Doughnut Bar downtown, you’re missing out.  Just make sure you swing by early, because once they’re out, they’re gone for the day!

·         Viora, the cellulite and fat reducing machine
·        Gastro pub: Luce kitchen and Bar
·         Gym In Coronado – personal training
·         The Donut Bar : San Diego’s best donuts!

There you are San Diego, the top gift ideas for any Dad.  What are you planning to gift Dad with this Father’s Day?  Let us know in the comments below!

Sunglasses + San Diego = A good time

Sunglasses + San Diego = A good time

The adventures of a non-glass wearer

By Amy Contizano, ABOC

Living in San Diego, we’re all too familiar with the act of applying sunscreen as we’re spoiled enough to live minutes away from beaches.  So you’re packing up for a day at the beach and you apply sunscreen and you bring more sunscreen along to reapply later, but what about sunscreen for your eyes?  It’s hard to believe, but many people overlook sunglasses.  “Well, I lose my sunglasses all the time so I just buy the cheap ones at the drug store” or “I got these because they were super cute but the tint seems kind of light”.  Does any of that sound familiar?

Sunglasses aren’t just a fashion choice but also a way to provide protection against the dangers of UV radiation.  Think about it, you’re out in Pacific Beach or strolling through our world famous San Diego Zoo and though you’ve applied sunscreen, you can still feel the warmth of the sun on your skin, prompting you to reapply sunscreen to protect yourself.  Do you do the same for your eyes?  Ultraviolet radiation, or UVR, cannot be seen with the naked eye and can cause damage in a number of eye related areas.  In 2013, the Vision Council did a study revealing that 40% of adults don’t wear sunglasses while outdoors, making them susceptible to major ocular issues that can easily be avoided with one simple step.

I’m not trying to get all scare tactics on you by any means.  I just think that this is one of those things that people don’t think about.  I mean, what harm can the sun really do to your eyes?  Well, for starters, the skin around the eyes is quite delicate so not wearing a good pair of sunglasses that are large enough to cover that area could lead to wrinkles and cancer of the eyelids and skin around the eyes.  UVR can also cause cataracts which is the clouding of the lens of the eye.  Benign growths can form on the eye’s surface due to excessive exposure to UVR and patients could also develop photokeratitis.  This condition is also called snow blindness, a temporary yet painful sunburn on the surface of the eye.  Comfortable vision is compromised without having sunglasses to block out the glare created by sunlight reflecting off of various surfaces.

So what exactly do you need to be on the lookout for when searching for that perfect pair of sunglasses that both protects your eyes and makes you look good?  Well, you want to make sure that the lenses are of ophthalmic quality, but what does that mean exactly?  It means the lens is of the same type of quality that is used for prescription lenses unlike the inexpensive lenses used in sunglasses that can be found at drug stores or gas stations.  Because the lenses are of a higher quality, they’ll block 99-100% of both UVA and UVB radiation.

Another option available for superior sun protection is to do polarized lenses, which reduce much more glare than a traditional sunglass tint would.  A good example of this is that if you were a fisherman and you were standing on the deck of your boat, wearing a lens with a sunglass tint would make things darker and block out the light, but you’d see the reflection of the sun bouncing off of the water’s surface.  Now, if you were wearing a polarized lens, then the glare would be eliminated so dramatically that you’d be able to see down into the water to see the fish.

At Global Laser Vision, we’re thrilled to provide you with the cutting edge technology of Maui Jim sunglasses.  Their patented polarized lenses give you the best clarity of vision with crisp lines and colors that pop allowing you to see clearly and comfortably even on the brightest, sunniest days as well as on those overcast days when glare is at an all time high.  Maui Jim sunglasses are available in prescription as well and are by far the best lens on the market to protect your eyes.  Here at Global Laser Vision, we introduce new styles frequently.  Stop in to see us and find out what your sunny life in SD can look like through a great pair of sunglasses!

If you’re looking to enhance your vision, there are ways you can achieve that by sitting down with a qualified doctor to discuss your vision needs. Patients with nearsightedness, farsightedness or astigmatism may benefit from San Diego Lasik surgery designed to correct vision problems once and for all. There are many factors your eye surgeon must consider before approving you for Lasik. You must be at least 18 years of age, have stable vision that has not deteriorated in the last year, and you must have a prescription for glasses and contacts that meets FDA approval for conditions like nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. In addition, you must have healthy retinas, corneas and eye pressure. You should also be free of certain eye diseases and conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes.
Keeping you Informed
Knowing how the entire process will play out is key in your initial Lasik consultation. This is when your team of doctors can better explore whether you’re a good candidate for Lasik through an in-depth consultation. You will also be advised of any potential side effects of the surgery before proceeding. Side effects are very rare but may include dry eye pain and visual distortions. It’s important to know the pros and cons of the surgery before making the final decision.

Glaucoma : LASIK options?

LASIK & Glaucoma
Glaucoma is an insidious disease that can usually manifest little to no actual symptoms. In fact, it is estimated that over 2.2 million people in the United States have Glaucoma, while only half of those people know they have the disease (1). Glaucoma affects nearly 2% of the population in the United States, which is over 2.7 million people. The number of patients diagnosed with glaucoma increased by half a million people between 2000 and 2010. (2). According to the World Health Organization, Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness across the world.
Glaucoma primarily affects the optic nerve, the pathway that carries images from the eye to the brain. While its exact mechanism isn’t fully understood, we know that Glaucoma ultimately causes atrophy (or cell death) of the optic nerve itself. This causes a progressive loss of peripheral vision, which could lead to total blindness if not treated.
Doctors use three primary means to detect Glaucoma. First, we can measure the amount of peripheral vision each person has through specific diagnostic testing. While any amount of peripheral vision loss is unusual, Glaucoma tends to create certain patterns of vision loss we can typically recognize. Second, we can check the health of the optic nerve itself though microscopic observation or photography. Third, it has been observed that the majority of patients with Glaucoma also have elevated eye pressures. Measuring this pressure is a standard test performed during any comprehensive visual exam. Testing eye pressure involves an instrument that either utilizes a puff of air or a probe that comes into contact with cornea, the clear front part of the eye. While these readings are generally very accurate, other factors besides eye pressure can affect the validity of these readings. One of these factors is the thickness of the cornea – an unusually thick cornea will cause eye pressure readings to be higher. Conversely, a thinner than average cornea will cause these readings to be lower. We can measure the corneal thickness and adjust our final pressure readings based on those findings.
For the majority of people that have been diagnosed with Glaucoma, LASIK can still be an excellent option to improve your vision. While LASIK cannot bring back vision that has been lost due to Glaucoma, it can still be used to reduce or eliminate your dependency on glasses or contact lenses. LASIK surgery involves reshaping the cornea of your eye. Usually after LASIK surgery, the cornea is thinner than before. This can affect the pressure readings your doctor records during your Glaucoma follow up exams. It is very important to tell the physician that you had LASIK so they can reference your new corneal thickness to calculate a more accurate pressure result.
While most patients with Glaucoma are likely excellent candidates for LASIK, it is important to come in for a free consultation to see if LASIK is right for you. We will provide a full health examination of your eyes and discuss with you how LASIK may be able to reduce or even eliminate your dependency on glasses or contact lenses. Schedule your free consultation today!

FYI : LASIK and It's side affects!

San Diego LASIK Center : Global Laser Vision

What are the most common side effects of laser vision correction?

We are answering all your questions on why you should take the next step to a better future!

CustomVue Wavescan
  1. Fluctuating Vision. After LASIK, the eye can continue to heal for up to 3 months after the date of surgery. A small number of patients may notice vision fluctuations during this healing process. NewLASIK technologies that we offer have greatly decreased the amount of time it takes for the eyes to heal. This, in turn, has decreased the vision fluctuations noticed during that time frame.
  2. Dry eyes. LASIK involved removing and reshaping tissue from the cornea, the clear front part of your eye. This tissue is also partly responsible for keeping the eye as moist as possible. After LASIK, we instruct our patients to use preservative-free artificial tears as often as possible. This not only makes your eyes feel better, it also promotes an ideal healing environment after surgery. Most patients only notice dryness for the first few weeks after surgery, if any.
  3. Night vision glare. LASIK involves reshaping only a small portion of your cornea. At night, the pupil of your eye gets bigger to allow more light in the eye. In many cases, the pupil extends past this LASIK treatment zone. This can cause the perception of glare or halos around traffic lights. New LASIK technologies, such as our CustomVue LASIK procedure, have greatly decreased this perception among our patients.
